The Wirehaired Dachshund quickly gained a reputation as a formidable hunting dog. Its wiry coat provided excellent protection against brambles, thorns, and the elements, while its strong build and determined nature made it an effective tracker and burrower. The breed was especially valued for its ability to pursue game into tight spaces and flush it out for the hunter.

In addition to badger hunting, Wirehaired Dachshunds were also used for hunting other small game, such as rabbits and foxes. Their keen sense of smell and strong prey drive made them adept at tracking scent trails over long distances, while their boldness and courage allowed them to confront larger animals when necessary.
